Women making a difference in South Canterbury

Timpany Walton: The Progressive South Canterbury Law Firm With a Strong Presence of Female Solicitors.

Maarten Dirkzwager joined Timpany Walton in 2004 as a solicitor and is now an Associate Timpany Walton currently employs six women solicitors and one legal executive. These women work at all levels within the firm, from Alice Caird who is a partner to Jayne Hooke a highly valued and experienced legal executive whose career developed within the firm having started out as a junior.

The percentage of women law graduates now outweighs that of men in New Zealand and Timpany Walton continue to tap into this pool of talent.

Timpany Walton aims to establish on-going working relationships with clients, based on trust, straightforwardness in their communications, total discretion and consistency in delivering a high quality service.

Developing relationships is one of the proven strengths when it comes to the communications skills of women; women are not so interested in establishing status as building connections.

The women at Timpany Walton work in a wide breadth of legal areas including Commercial Law, Litigation, Property, Family Trusts, Family Law, Criminal Law and Employment.
“Timpany Walton is a great firm to work for; it is supportive to staff and has a modern customer focus”, says Michelle Broadhurst, a staff solicitor who has been working with the firm for the past five years.

“Events that bring people to the firm often involve major transitions in their lives” says Alice, “managing the legal work in a personal way with a view to the bigger picture can help people through these transitions.”

Timpany Walton is fully supportive of flexible working arrangements and this policy has enabled Alice Caird, Dianne Higgins and Charlotte Clifford to combine their professional roles with that of being young mothers.

An open collegial atmosphere within the firm, in which professional sharing is supported and encouraged, makes Timpany Walton an extremely attractive law practice to work for, especially for young solicitors.

Outside of work Alice Caird is Trustee of the YWCA Bursary Trust, President of the Aoraki Community Toy Library. Michelle Broadhurst is Secretary/Treasurer of the Fire Netball Club, she is also captain of one of the team’s and coaches a junior team. Other women staff are involved in PTAs, book groups, and sporting activities.
